Этот подвид замещает в степных районах равнин и низкогорий Евразии (а возможно, и в Кордильерах Северной Америки) более высокогорный подвид H. hookeri subsp. hookeri (=H. asiaticum Roschev. excl. pl. caucas.), отличающийся от subsp. schellianum лишь в среднем более густыми метелками и буровато-зелеными колосками с золотистым оттенком.
