Бореальный евразиатский вид. На протяжении обширного ареала встречаются многочисленные, по-видимому, экологические формы этого вида, отличающиеся размерами листьев и цветков; в европейской части ареала широко распространены гибридогенные формы между N. alba L. и N. candida J. Presl. Л. Крупкина.
