Поліморфний вид, екологічні форми якого нерідко визнають як самостійні види. Поза межами України відомі гібриди з близькими видами Potamogeton filiformis Pers (Stuckenia filiformis (Pers.) Borner) та P. vaginatus Turcz. (S. vaginata (Turcz.) J.Holub) тощо. В Україні зростає у повільно текучих річках, в озерах, ставках, а також у лиманах та морських затоках, звичайно по всій території. У гірських районах поширений виключно в передгір'ї. Н. Шиян.
