Западносредиземноморский вид, происходящий по-видимому, с Пиренейского п-ова, но широко введенный в культуру в качестве кормового растения, дающего ценный корм для канареек и некоторых других птиц - так называемое канареечное семя. В СССР лишь изредка встречается в качестве культивируемого, одичавшего или заносного растения во многих областях европейской территории СССР, на Кавказе и на юге Сибири. Н. Цвелев.
