Очень спорадично распространенный неморальный вид, вместе с F. drymeja Mert. et Koch принадлежащий к одной из наиболее примитивных секций рода – Phaeochloa Griseb. (emend. Krivot.). На значительную примитивность этих двух видов указывают, в частности, такие признаки, как густоволосистая на верхушке завязь и присутствие кожистых чешуевидных листьев у основания побегов. В морфологическом отношении F. altissima характеризуется лишь очень незначительном полиморфизмом. Н. Цвелев.
