Rumex acetosa L. широко распространенный вид по всем районам СССР наблюдаемый на лугах, болотных почвах, во влажных лесах, на альпийских лугах; очень часто под названием R. acetosa L. приво¬дится другой вид щавеля, R. thyrsiflorus Fing., приуроченный к другим экологическим условиям — к более сухим, песчаным и известковым почвам; виды эти хорошо различаются между собой прежде всего корневой системой — у Rumex acetosa L. корень мочковатый, тогда как у R. thyrsiflorus Fing, корень стержневой мощный, достигающий большой длины (1 м и больше), листья у R. acetosa более нежные и нижние лопасти не загнуты в стороны, более короткие, чем у R. thyrsiflorus Fing., соцветие R. acetosa узкое, с прижатыми ветвями, а не пирамидальное, как у R. thyrsiflorus.
