In ruderatis secus vias, ad fossas ubique copiose. Meist auf angebautem Boden, an Wegen und Zäunen, auf Schuttpfätzen und oft unter der Saat ein lästiges Unkraut.

Sonst waren Kraut und Blüthen - Herba et Flores Cardui haemorrhoidalis - officinell und gegen Unterleibsstockungen verordnet. Die durch Insektenstiche sich bildenden Auswüchse dienen in den Voksmedicin zu Salbe gegn Hämorrhoiden; die in ihnen sich befindenden noch lebenden weissen Insektenlarven sollen gegn Zahnschmerzen heilsam sein. Die Pflanze soll viel Laugensalz enthalten und könnte desshalb in Glashütten Verwendung finden. Jung ist sie als Viehfutter besonders für die Schweine nutzbar. DUPLA. Ex. Herb. Inst. Bot. Ac. Sc.
